People take care of themselves by eating well, exercising, taking vacations, staying away from the sweets and fast food, and other tried and true methods of keeping healthy and strong. When it comes to your business you may also do what you can to take care of it; you might invest in a new computer system or software, new office equipment, new staff, a new work vehicle or equipment. Or even a new bank and banker that knows what there doing and can be of a real asset (Hint-Hint). But what are you doing as a business owner or professional to invest in yourself? Are you willing to upgrade yourself, your image, your skill set, or your attitude? Are you willing to make yourself over into a lean mean business machine?
First, why. Why should you take the time and effort to invest in yourself? In life as well as business, unless you invest a little time and some money in yourself how do you expect anyone else to follow your lead; this is mission critical if you have employees that you need to move to the next level in knowledge and desire? The second has to do with results. For example, if you have a small Internet site that barely contains any information, almost no exciting content, no blogs, no suggestions page, and a small inventory of items, how do you expect to get very far with it?
What are some things that you could do to better yourself as a business owner and professional? First, learn. Does your industry have trade magazines, if so, do you subscribe to them? Do you keep informed with the latest news, tools, products and or services, movers and shakers in the industry, and other vital information? Better yet, your clients and prospects, do they have trade magazines that are related to their trade? Why not subscribe to those? Find out what issues your clients and prospects might be dealing with, know their competitors, find out about the other products and services they use, and a wealth of other information that you can use to better arm yourself as their go to guy or gal.
With just a little effort in yourself can most times be the determining factor in getting a stronger relationship with a client or prospects. It may move that employee to follow your example and take the time and effort to better themselves. It could give you knowledge that your competition only wishes they knew. Yes, time in yourselves is well worth the effort, you’ll have more confidence to make sure you’re staying on top of your field.
