The New and Improved Cooking Competition Show

My wife loves cooking shows! From America’s Test Kitchen to Cake Boss; if its on, she’s watching it. The beneficiary of course is the kids and I because she’ll get inspired to cook new and exciting dishes. Just last week we had some BBQ Ribs, potato salad, and cookies; all new recipes and very delish. In addition, from time to time she’ll watch these reality/game show type kitchen competitions. I personally can’t stand them. Don’t get me wrong they can be entertaining from time to time. Nevertheless, that’s the norm with many of these reality/game shows; they’re train wrecks waiting to happen.

How about stepping it up a notch? These cooking competition shows always use the same people; Sous Chefs, Sauté Chefs, Pantry Chefs, Pastry Chefs, and the Chef de Cuisine. What about the common folk with no formal schooling in the culinary arts? Where’s their show? Sure, you might say they have Man v Food and Guy Fieri, but I want more!

How about a show that takes your typical line cook, fry cook and salter, burger assembler, burrito wrapper, hash slinger, food truck hawker, and other fast food purveyors and throw them together like the meat in an ill-conceived McDonald’s rib sandwich? The ultimate goal would be to see if they could take their skills to the next level(s). Could they handle the rigors of a Le Bernadin, The Georgian, Takashi, Per Se, or Eleven Madison Park? Could they handle the heat from the General Manager, the Sommelier, the Expo, the Maitre D’ and The Chef de Froid?

Wouldn’t it be awesome to see how’d they do with wine tastings and pairings? How about cooking the perfect Wellington or a Filet? Sure, you’d have the train wrecks but I guarantee you’d have the cream that would rise to the top. The ultimate goal? Money always works. Or possibly a job at one of these swanky spots, or a full ride scholarship to a French Culinary School. Anyway you slice it, it would make for must see TV.
